CUIJK WINS GP ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD
(Cuijk, July 8 2010) – Georgia-Pacific’s Cuijk mill has won a 2009 Georgia-Pacific Environmental Excellence Award for its wastewater treatment project.
Wastewater treatment is one of more critical processes within paper making. As a result of this project, we:
· increased the overall efficiency of our bioplant by over 13%
· reduced the amount of water discharged into the municipal sewer
· reduced SO2 emissions by more than 99%
“The Georgia-Pacific Cuijk mill is now one of the lowest emitters of SO2 in the Dutch paper industry,” stated Ferdinand Koster, mill manager of Cuijk. “Another interesting aspect of this project that is worth noting is that we now produce enough clean biogas to meet the needs of the village of Katwijk next to the mill,” he continued.
The Georgia-Pacific Environmental Excellence Awards are presented annually to company facilities or business groups to recognize outstanding environmental achievement. Entries are evaluated using a variety of criteria, including resource conservation, reduction of environmental impact, innovation, cost effectiveness, employee involvement, community benefit and overall program excellence.

The mill in Cuijk is one of the 22 facilities of Georgia-Pacific in Europe. It employs over 400 people and produces well-known brands such as Lotus, Demak’Up and Lotus Professional.
